What is a vacuum and siphon the gravel? [The first time cleaning a 10 gallon aquarium?]?
It's my first time to get some goldfish, and I know I have to clean the tank in two weeks. But I wonder what a siphon and a gravel vacuum? I need one to clean my fish tank, or not? Because everywhere I look up "cleaning fish tank" every article speaks of a gravel siphon and vacuum.
If you no fish, however, stop! A single goldfish needs 10-20 gallons at least, plus 10 additional gallons for each additional fish. This is just to that begin to grow and then you have to update. If you have the impression that goldfish are good start, it's not fair TRUE. That produce tons of waste, heavy filtration and high maintenance. Go to your pet store, bookstore or public library and get a book or two of maintenance of the aquarium, and one fish colors. If you already have the fish, I recommend taking it back. This tends to be a disaster. If you have your heart set on brightly colored fish, keep the one you like best, and take the rest back. If you do not have the fish, however, I would suggest some better "starter fish." You can save up to 10 " fish in a 10 gallon tank (with the exception of goldfish). Yo me 3 Corydoras catfish (must be kept in groups of 3 or more), and 2 Plati, or 1 male Betta. All are rugged, and can withstand which is maintained by an amateur again. Just be sure to read the maintenance aquarium first, make sure the tank is properly configured and cycling before adding the fish. Then add only the catfish, or just Plati, and then wait two weeks for the tank to stabilize before add others. As to your question on the siphon and vacuum. They do what the names imply. A siphon is used to siphon (drainage) of water tank and a vacuum of empty gravel uneaten food and waste in the gravel. If you have the catfish, you will not have to vacuum as often as you eat uneaten food in the gravel, but do not eat the waste. You should siphon off 20-25% (2-2.5 gallons) of water and replace with clean water to which was added the amount adequate air and which has been allowed to sit long enough for it to come to room temperature (as night). Use a clean spoon, which has never had soap or chemicals in it. When I got my first aquarium, I bought a 5 gallon bucket and wrote new fish on the side of the magic marker. That is all that I used to. You must make this partial water change every week. If the filter is dirty, remove it and rinse it in the dirty water has been diverted out and then put back in not rinse under the tap, which kill bacteria that have colonized. To use the siphon and vacuum (generally come as an all-in-one unit) follow the instructions in the package, or better yet, ask someone from your local fish store to demonstrate how to use one. Most fish experts will be happy to help a beginner to get started! If you're lucky enough to live near a fish store, locally owned, go there, rather than PetSmart or Petco.
